Andante con moto - Allegro un poco agitato II. Vivace non troppo III. Adagio IV. Allegro vivacissimo - Allegro maestoso assai Symphony No.4 in A major, Op.90 'Italian' I. Allegro vivace II. Andante con moto III. Con moto moderato IV. Saltarello. Presto This is as thrilling an account of the two most popular Mendelssohn symphonies as you are likely to hear. The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra has an excellent reputation for the accuracy of its playing, and Herbert Blomstedt uses this as a starting point for his fresh and spontaneous interpretations: it actually feels like he is approaching the music with all the awe and wonder of a young tyro, and yet he has a weight of experience behind him. He controls the fearsome changes of tempi in the first movement of the Scottish Symphony with ease, and never lets a single repeated semiquaver (and there are plenty of them!) in the second movement slip out of place. And in the third movement he avoids the danger of treacly sentiment and opts for a brisk, delicate feel. The orchestra plays with astonishing beauty: the strings shimmer, the winds play as one, and the brass has a clear, bright edge which never slips into mere blaring. This is Mendelssohn out of the nineteenth and into the twenty-first century. -- Warwick Thompson | |
